| World must work as one - King By Musa Ndlangamandla HIS Majesty King Mswati III yesterday told 100 world leaders that no country was immune from the afflictions of another, be it war, poverty, or unemployment. He said time had come for all countries of the world to be fully involved in issues affecting mankind. His Majesty was addressing the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Durban, where the beleaguered Democratic Republic of Congo was the main item on the agenda. The King was accompanied to the meeting by Inkhosikati LaHwala and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Albert Shabangu. In a speech focusing on world peace and development through collective effort, the King said strife in any country was a threat to peace and development in the world. "The Kingdom of Swaziland believes that the dialogue NAM has opened with the G7 countries serves as notice that the movement has the right to be heard in solving global affairs," he said. In another matter, His Majesty called for reform in the United Nations Security Council to make it more representative and accountable to the membership. He said time had come for Africa to have atleast two permanent seats with full voting rights and all powers accorded, under the present system. The King said the proper inclusion of all countries in the Security Council would ensure that members' interests are served effectively. "A majority of UN member States already support the view of NAM on the need for reform of the Security Council. Our view is that there should be more representation in the most influential organ of the UN. The Kingdom of Swaziland fully endorses the view that the continent should have two permanent seats and must have full voting rights. They must be accorded all powers under the present system," the King said. He added that the summit presented the opportunity to present a united voice to increase the credibility of the UN so that it could serve its members more effectively. In another matter, His Majesty assured President Nelson Mandela the Kingdom's undivided support and co-operation following the election of South Africa to the chairmanship of NAM for the next three years. "As a neighbour and friend, we have full confidence that you will successfully accomplish NAM's goals," he said. |
